Walking Poles are designed as an aid to walking and hiking over rough and uneven terrain, and to aid climbing and descending steep slopes.
They are also used by power walkers to increase upper body exercise.
As well as to aid balance when crossing uneven ground or fording a river, when going up hill the pole(s) can be used to help pull yourself up and so reduce the load on your legs.
Coming downhill they help to maintain a steady rate of descent.
Height Adjustable Walking Poles
It is important to be able to adjust the height of your walking pole, and so make sure the pole(s) you buy are fully height adjustable.
The poles need to be lengthened when going downhill, and shortened when going uphill.
When gripping the pole handle loosely with the tip on the ground, your forearm should be horizontal.
